Vauxhall Astra fuel injection pump?

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Variant: 2.0 l dti diesel
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Here's my problem, my car starts up no prob in the morn, runs 100% and can run all day.Next day same thing but then while running will suddenly cut out and come to a halt and not start. If I wait 5 mins it will start again and run 100% and could run a couple of days before happening again. A diagnostic has been done and I'm told the problem is leaning towards a faulty fuel injector pump (possibly a stuck or seized solenoid). I don't mind changing a pump if that is the problem but I'm wondering if that is the problem should the car not run at all? or show other symptoms? and not stop only now and again. The car runs ok between stoppages. Its too expensive to change the pump to not sort the car. I hope this makes sense. It happens regardless how much or little fuel in tank.

Considering the pump's cost and no direct fault codes I'd be inclined to suspect the crank angle sensor.
pump faults usually present some chugging and not cutting dead.
Oh and a CAS doesn't always leave a code as the ECU doesn't see a signal so assumes the engine isn't even turning over.
CAS faults can be intermittent and difficult to pin down as when they're working they work!
And a lot cheaper than a pump.

to 1/4 drive thanks for your quick reply. A few months back the car was going into 'limp mode' and the fault that time was the crank angle sensor (crankshaft position sensor) and a new one was fitted then. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated . Or maybe a new pump is only answer?

A pump "might" be the only answer,
I just have a problem with the phrase "leaning towards"
bit vague no?
There's at least 10 pump/solenoid related codes,
and it logged none?
check Yell for your nearest diesel injection specialist.
they will be able to pull useful information from the ECU.
I'm leaning towards our mechanic not really knowing what's wrong.
