Vauxhall Astra strange noise from engine on pulling away or reversing

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Variant: 1.8 Elite Auto Petrol
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I have a growling/vibrating type of noise coming from the engine only when pulling away or reversing, worse when cold.

It sounds like a loose exhaust or loose manifold but they have both been checked and found OK.

It was thought that it might be the alternator belt jumping but that has been adjusted and checked and I still get this noise.

My local Vauxhall Dealer gave me a story about it might be the air valve intake growling but I had another garage check that out and it was OK.

Everyone is mystified but I cannot believe I am the only 2007 Astra owner with this problem.

It has always been there but as the car gets older the level of noise and vibration is getting worse
