Vauxhall Astra engine noise

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Variant: 1.8 SRI 16V
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Leaks & Noises
every time i start my car and get into 2nd gear 2 consecutive noises can be heard coming from the engine as if a switch is engaging/disengaging?? - does anyone know what this is?

In addition when exceeding 2500 rpm in any gear i can hear a tapping that increases in frequency as the rpm increases and am not sure what it is??

Would the above tapping result in loss of oil? i need to top the oil up monthly but am not sure where its going - there are no evident leaks and oil doesn't seem to bein burnt in the exhaust??

not to sure about the switch noise but the tapping noise is the hydraulic tappets in the head of the engine making a noise due to oil level being low and must be checked on a regular basis due to oil loss somewhere but do check and keep topped up to the level
