Hi,
On 2nd March 2014 I purchased a brand new petrol Vauxhall Limited Edition Astra 1.6i 16V.
In the first week of having the car I noticed that the fuel consumption was very poor and was nowhere near meeting the mpg figures predicted by Vauxhall.
I called the garage and booked the car in for examination on Friday 4th April 2014.
On this day I took the car to the garage and a test was performed on the vehicle and I was told by the Service Advisor that nothing could be found wrong with the car. I was also told that with petrol consumption problems it was not possible to investigate further until the mileage on the car had reached 5,000 and all the parts had worn in. I told him that this was not acceptable.
I then contacted Vauxhall Customer Care who also told me that there was nothing that could be done until my car had reached 5,000 miles.
I, like yourself, find the car very sluggish, especially when going up not too challenging hills and having to go down through the gears, to keep up the momentum. This generally causes a tailback of other vehicles, which in turn causes me great embarrassment.
I have recorded the mpg for my the following journeys
Extra urban 41 mpg (75% of predicted figure above)
Extra urban 38 mpg (70%)
Extra urban 39 mpg (72%) - This is the latest calculation where the mileage on my car now stands at 2,400 miles.
The worst recorded performance was 26 mpg which was calculated over 3 days where 85 miles were covered. This included an extra urban trip of 60 miles, all motorway from Bristol to Newport and back and 25 miles travelling around Bristol on a urban to combined cycle. Being meagre by using the combined figure of 44.1 my mpg recorded was still only 60% of this figure which is appalling.
I am now wondering having seen your problem whether this batch of vehicles have a common fault. I will be asking Motor Codes/Trading Standards to investigate.
