Vauxhall Astra hole in gearbox

PUT THE CAR IN TO GET CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL REPLACED, BUT WHEN THE CAR WAS BEING WORKED ON A HOLE WAS FOUND ON THE GEARBOX.A LAYSHAFT BEARING FAILURE WAS SAID TO BE THE PROBLEM. MAIN DEALER SAID THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS BOX (M20 I BELIEVE) RECON GEARBOX WALLAHS SAY A COMMON PROBLEM SOMETHING TO DO WITH SHIMS WHICH IS CORRECTED ON THE RECON MODEL. ANY VIEWS/OPINIONS WOULD BE WELCOME.

For some reason these gearboxes are particularly with various common faults such as the one you describe and synchro units failing.We have repaired one this week with 1,2 gear issue.
