Vauxhall Agila using oil

Car: Vauxhall Agila
Variant: 1.2
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
Hi, my 2003 has started to use alot of oil, i have gone up in oil to 10w40 as was suggested, i have also done a compression test, 3 cylinders were at 200 and the 4th was at 180, the instructions for the tester said take the average and it should be no more than 10% out, the lower of the 4 cylinders had a black sooty deposit on the electrode to the spark plug, would this indicate the piston ring/s have gone? many thanks NIC

it does suggest the rings are worn , or if the car is smokey esp when starting , the valve stem oil seals may need replacing
