My daughters Adam is having exactly the same intermittent problem. At first it happened on a long 2 hour journey. Luckily she managed to pull into a service station. After 3 hours off the car being switched off, whilst waiting for the AA, it magically fixed itself and she managed to drive it the rest of the way home without any issues. Yesterday it happened on a short 20 minute journey. We have also taken to a garage and they can’t find anything wrong with it. I have seen this problem flagged on a couple of forums but can’t find anyone that has found an answer or a solution. We are wondering if it could be an electrical problem or some how linked to cruise control? The first two times it happened it when trying to go into cruise control. Yesterday the notification on the dashboard that normally tells you need to change gear wasn’t working and then struggled to change gear. Any ideas are welcome!

If you suspect it may be an electrical fault , the first thing to do would be LOAD test the battery and alternator . Simple 5 min test that most garages / fast fit usually carry out f.o.c while you wait . BUT ......................that gearbox is known to suffer from synchro hub problems .
