Toyota Corolla battery steaming and bubbling noises

Car: Toyota Corolla
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Leaks & Noises
after driving for an hour noticed bad eggish smell then when lilfted bonnet saw steam/smoke coming out of battery and could hear bubbling/fizzing noises.
Is it likely to catch fire or anything and is it dead now or will it work when cooled down and why has it got so hot?
Thanks

sounds like the alternator is overcharging the battery but when a battery is gassing and you get that smell be careful that it does not explode. the battery may well be faulty now but if when cooled down and you start the vehicle the voltage across the battery should not read more than about 14.5 volts if its much more suspect the alternator also a bad battery can sometimes make the alternator appear to overcharge so try it with a known good battery
