Skoda Octavia ignition lights

Car: Skoda Octavia
Variant: 1.9tdi glx
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Removed the negative battery lead because the clamp bolt thread stripped, replaced it with a new lead but it did not have the connector on it that earths the lead to the body (under the battery). When I tried to start the car the engine turned over and all the ignition lights went very dim, and there was clicking noises from the relays under the dash and engine would not start.I put the old lead back on and used a jubilee clip around the clamp bolt to hold it secure and the car started normally, except the battery warning light is very faint and only goes off after high revs, this was working normally before I removed the lead, all the other warning lights are bright and the battery is less than 12 months old. any ideas please

Check and clean all your earth lead connections onto the body and check the connections onto your alternator ,If you have a multimeter then check the alternator is charging okay.Other common fault is the steering rack speed sensor they were faulting ,check yours is a metal one and not a plastic one that was prone to cracking, you should find it ok,it,s on the drivers side of the steering rack.
