when engine is switched on the rev counter will go up to between 1500 and 2000 revs on its own fluctuating between them both an then while driving it will over rev, each time taken back to garage they cant find a fault its getting quite annoying now at 1 point the garage we bought it from had it there for 9 weeks

Could be the idle speed stepper motor needing cleaned / replaced .
