Rover 75 cooling system,radiator fan

Car: Rover 75
Variant: 1.8T Auto
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Had the car a week, running fine.done 3-400 miles long and short runns just to check things ok.Did about 10 miles at about 50 mph, oarked up got back in after about an hour,400 yards and temp gauge hit max.pulled in checked coolant tank looked full felt pipes from rad etc. seemed empty. So let it cool down a while took cap aff added about half pint of water kept squeezing pipe to get rid of air, drove home seems fine,One thing i have noticed over last day or twofan seemed to be on a lot and for ages when ignition turned off.
ANY IDEAS THANKS Swingy 58

Check for leaks, possibly pressure test on system,to see why it,s lost coolant, block test for cylinder head issue,s.

Could test thermostat , check rad not partially blocked .A pressure test should show any external leaks causing drop in header tank level. A block test will check head /gasket .

if coolant level is low or has been low system will have an air lock so fan will run as above check for leaks problem areas are water pump leak /inlet manifold gasket leak rectify and blead out cooling system make sure heater in car is nice and hot problem is if these engines are overheated it damages the special rubber bead on the head gasket this in turn will eventually cause mixing of coolant and oil into the engine or into the cooling system depending on where the sealing bead has failed so never let coolant level drop on these engines check level on a regular basis
