Rover 75 seperating clutch hydraulic components!

Trying to replace clutch master cylinder, diconnected everything under the dash but cant seperate the push fit connection under the battery tray! Haynes says gently prise apart with a thin bladed screwdriver, but nothing shifts it am I missing something? is there another option?

could be wrong but i thought you have to push the inner part in towards the bigger outer bit and then pull at the same time as that releases it
