Rover 45 car started pulling back and then engine light came on..shortly after that smoke started coming out of the exhaust. drove the car straight back home since i was only a mile away. checked the oil and it's clear, the water is a bit mucky but

if the smoke is white this indicates head gasket blown if the smoke was blueish this indicates worn piston rings either way not good news

Those cars are notorious for head gaskets . The coolant is not mixing with oil on your car but going out the exhaust hence white smoke .A block test will confirm if any doubt .
