Rover 400 temperature gauge fluctuation

Variant: 1.6 Si
Model Year: 1998

When Reving Car over 4000 Revs (accelerating to 70 in 3rd Gear) my temperature gauge drops to zero. As soon as I dip my clutch to change, It returns to normal.
I'm stumped! Can anyone help?

check sender unit to gauge. also earth out wires to gauge and see if it rises!!!
