Rover 25 overheating

my water pipes are filling with air no hot air coming out of heater I have changed the ther stat and still the same my HG seem to be fine as there is no gunk of creamy stuff in tank or on dipstick or oil cap I have been told it could be a ball bearing in the inlet man

The head gasket could still be knackered . Depends where it's blown whether you get emulsified oil or not . A sniff test (block test ) will confirm if gasket blown . Is this what you are refering to ,



Take the inlet manifold off, where the little brass stub pipe, which connects to the header tank, remove the ball bearing "clack valve" from inside, this is prone to seizing up, and preventing recirc to the header tank, a major cause of HGF!, and in answer to your original question, yes drill an 1/8" hole in the flange of the new thermostat, as this prevents thermal shock, when the 'stat opens.
