Rover 25 car is using up too much fuel.

Car: Rover 25
Variant: Rover 25 Impression 1.4 2002
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
Hi
My rover 25 has a problem where it has an average of only 15 mpg. it should be around 40 and i am concerned as i am paying more and causing me to fill up more times.

For example, I drove 135 miles at a cost of £33 and the tank is already under half after i filled it up to the brim. i am wondering if this is ok or whether there is a problem with the fuel system/gauge ?

Thanks

When was the car last serviced or engine tuned ?

Last week i changed the air filter, brakes, plugs and gave it an oil change. I bought this rover only 1-2 months ago. Does this help?

To find out if it is using fuel or a faulty gauge , fill right up to top and note mileage . Then do 100/150 mls and refill again , check how much fuel added and work out mileage .That way you will know as near as damn it mpg .

We've already tried this from the description. we put in £33 and this drove 135 miles and we are already under half a tank.

Think you are being very , very optimistic and misinformed if you expect that car and that age to give you 40mpg .Especially if doing short journeys and stop start town driving and also dependant on mileage car has done .That figure of 41mpg was when car was new and tested under specific , standard lab conditions .This gives figures exceeding normal driving conditions on the road , which varies vastly compared with how car driven and type of driving i.e city , motorway etc .If you still think it is using too much fuel , get the emissions tested .
