Rover 200 losing water and very hot

Car: Rover 200
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
My car has started using a lot of water and is getting very hot....the fan is cutting in but is then staying on for what seems like a long time to cool the engine down even after only going a short distance....I have checked the oil and this is fine and is no white substance associated with head gasket...any one have any ideas what it could be??

It all depends where the head gasket is blown whether you get water mixing with oil or not .First thing I would check is thermostat which may be jammed shut . If that's o.k , check for any leaks.A pressure test on cooling system will show up any external leaks and if that is o.k a sniff test ( block test ) will tell you if it's the very common head gasket gone .

check the cooling system for good circulation because thermostats can jam, check for leaks from your hoses and the inlet manifold gasket, water pump and coolant rail on back of block as these are all prone to leaking, the brown coolant sensor on the front of the head can play up on these engines,

Well just a bit of an update.....have today had someone look at car and it is indeed the head gasket.....Just wondering any one have any idea of the cost of replacing this and if it is really worth it or should I just scrap the car???

I have the same problem with mine, got it back after MOT and it wasn't right, you could hear it slurping water from the tank..not good

but to answer the cost, depends who you go with, my mate offered to do it for £200 and the garage said £350 ish. Mind you your paying for labour the new seal (which is great/better than the old one) only costs a nominal amount. So if your savvy with a hammer and some PVA you could sort it! lol joke
