First time it takes a lot of turning over before it eventually starts from from cold but after that its fine. sometimes its seem to fire 2 or 3 cylinders first off but not always.
i checked the spark plugs and they don't appear to spark with the engine turning over on the starter but spark briefly just as i turn the ignition off?

What you describe USUALLY means cranking the engine is using all the battery power to turn engine at cost of spark . Can be caused by low battery condition or a " lazy " starter taking too much of a draw in cranking engine . Test battery condition , if needed remove starter and bench test . Also check battery terminals , starter wiring / connection and all earths
