Renault Scenic not running properly

Car: Renault Scenic
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
I have just changed the timing belt and now the engine refuses to tick over properly. ( too slow). The Haynes manual seems to point to the timing belt not tensioned properly, I have checked thisand it seems to be spot on. I was wondering how critical is the timing belt tension, and if there could be another fault

If it was all right prior to replacing belt , double check timing set up correctly .

Used a bracket to lock the camo shafts in place and a pin t lock the crankshaft before removing the old timing belt, and when I checked everything again it all lined up.

You don't say what engine is in car , petrol / diesel . Depending on engine , could also be the very common coil pack .

the car is petrol and it has individual coils for each cyclider.

"the car is petrol and it has individual coils for each cyclider."

I am aware of that and that is why I assumed it was petrol and suggested the coil packs which are always giving probs .If one fails ,it means you can drop a cyl. or have misfire etc. Could be wrong and it might be something else .
