Hi Chris,
not sure if this is relevant or of any use to you, but here goes.
We own a 1999 megane 1.4 , had the same problem , noticed gauge running high but ignored it for a few days as we did not do too many miles per trip.
I got a new job which involved about a 20 mile drive each way. The gauge was at bottom at start and rose to the top by the time i arrived at work. This happened a number of times ( the warning light also came on but we were told by a garage that this was possibly a prob with the onboard computer. We did not mention the high gauge reading. ) This problem worsened until driving back one day steam issued from the rad reservoir. The cap blew due to too much pressure of the build up of steam and even after refilling with copious amounts of water ( and antifreeze ) the same problem occured every few miles.
This resulted in a breakdown on a busy m-way junction. After 30 minutes or so the engine had cooled enough for me to limp it home. I think the head gasket has blown.
Having the bonnet up I did notice the simple solution to the problem. Not sure if your model is the same, but ours has no fanbelt to cool the rad, but a separate electric motor attached to the fan. This had ceased to function and so could not cool the rad sufficiently.
A simple solution but not realising this caused us hundreds of pounds of problems.
Hope this helps
Regards
James
