Renault Megane dash light connected to exhaust?

Car: Renault Megane
Model Year: 1997
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My exhaust rattles sometimes on quiet roads. When driving on the motorway it bangs and rattles badly. When driving on the motorway the other day it was rattling and banging and then a light came on the dash. The best way I can describe the light is it looks like a heart beat monitor or 3 mountains close together. Would this be related to the exhaust problem?

Hi,

Its sounds as if there could be a couple of possible reasons for this:
1. A bracket could have rusted away from your exhaust making it rattle or..
2. Part of the baffle inside the rear exhaust box could have come loose and could be rattling around inside.

Have you noticed if the noise is coming from the front or rear of the vehicle?

Also the dash light you mention sounds like the oxygen sensor (Lambda) which monitors exhaust gases etc. If your exhaust is rattling around then it has obviously upset or blown this sensor.

Make sure its safe and the engine is cold get under the car and give the exhaust itself a push and a pull, there will be some play as the exhaust sits on rubber mounts but if it moves around excessively then you have a bracket gone.
If you can hear something in the rear ox itself moving then your baffles have gone.

Best bet to save yourself a couple of quid get down to a local exhaust/tyre centre where they normally do exhaust system checks for free and get them check it. Let me know how you get on.
