Renault Laguna very noisy car when travelling at 45mph or faster - it's definitely not the exhaust. what can it be? help!

Car: Renault Laguna
Variant: Alize 1598cc petrol 5 door hatchback
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My Renault Laguna started making a really loud noise when I was travelling at higher speeds. It sounds similar to the noise you'd have if there was a hole in the exhaust but it's not a rattling noise. You don't get the noise when the car is idling. Now though, it's getting louder and has started to make the noise at a lower speed of 40mph. Sounds a bit like an aircraft about to take off! My car has 80,000 miles on the clock and I'd like to try and keep it if possible. Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

Sounds like a wheel bearing needing replaced , usually a droning type noise .

If it was a wheel bearing needing replacement, would the noise subside or lessen when going round a right hand bend for example? Also, are these easy to fix yourself or do you need specialist garage equipment?

Yes ,noise varies when load transfers on/off bearing . Best to get garage to replace bearing .

That's exactly what it was on my Laguna Suzy, also louder on cornering, cost me about £80 at the time and done in 90 mins.

Sorry it's taken me so long to post up this solution. Firstly, a big thank you for all the advice, especially whittingehame. Turns out that it was indeed a wheel bearing but I had 2 replaced as apparently the 2nd was also on the way out. Cost was just under £200 everything included for both rear bearings. Car is running like a dream now and I'm so relieved!!
