Renault Laguna problems starting in cold

Car: Renault Laguna
Variant: 2l rti laguna
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My car wont start and has had a lot of problems with it during this cold weather.
the first time it didnt start, my friend jumped the battery, and that seemed to do the trick, until another spurt of snow came, and had same problem, so I decided to buy a new battery and had it fitted, but no joy this time.
My friend tried again to jump it, with new battery on(which was trying to turn over, but was like it wouldnt spark)and after 1/2 hour, totally drained the new battery in my lauguna.
You smell petrol when trying to start, and the car tries to turn over, but obv. doesnt.
I realise this is an old car, but its my pride n joy, and is like havin no legs, not having my car.
Can anybody help me on this matter,PLEASE, as its driving me mad..Does someone else have the same car, and having similar problems...?????
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated..

Crankshaft sensor and engine coolant temperature sensor are common faults .
