Renault Laguna rattly engine

Car: Renault Laguna
Variant: 1.8 16v
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
Hi, on friday my car engine seemed to turn itself into a diesel! Driving home the engine suddenly went from lovely and smooth engine noise to a gutteral rattly noise. Prior to this the speedo kept jumping from 60 to 70. Still drives but obviously havent since taking to the garage as I'm afraid the thing will blow up or something. Garage listened to it, checked oil levels etc (which were fine), sucked their teeth and said new cam bearings???or a new engine!!! Either way expensive jobs. Any ideas as I can't afford this and it would be a shame to scrap it coz it's just had a new clutch/brakes/service in May?

Many thanks, Hayles x

Was this a Renault garage that checked car ? If not , get a second opinion from another garage who are familar with Renaults to be sure their diagnosis is correct . There are other possible ,less serious causes of this noise , here is an example ,

Hi. I have a renault laguna 1.8 16v Dynamique 2002, hatchback and has a rattling sound when idling (like a diesel car). i think that this is probably how they sound, i just bought the car from a local dealer and would not like to think there is a problem already. I am use to driving a 2.5 v6 omega, not these "smaller engined lawnmowers" lol

mine sounds the same, been told by renault it's a noisey dephaser , cost from them was $264 approx and they said to do cam belt same time @ £650, they wouldn't state whether the belt actually needed changing.

It wasn't a renault garage. It sounds so loud, like a bag of spanners t b honest. Hubby normally drives it, and has admitted maybe oil was quite low (or very low if my husband says quite low lol). Noise is there all the time, at any revs/speed/idle. Got another garage to have a proper look on wednesday, but some ideas/info would help with the jargon the garages will throw at me as my hubby will b at work.
Thanks,
Hayley

PS wow, speedy reply!

either dephaser pully or acruator solenoid on top of head near the pullys. these solenoids have a habbit if falling apart and causing one hell of a rattle. check thsat first before doing dephaser pully. if it is pully at fault, the do change cambelt kit AND water pump... just done too many of these, its so common!!!!
