Find a competent mechanic!
If you can get it running with easy start then the Crank sensor has to be working for it to run.
There are certain conditions with faulty starter motors where the electrical "noise" generated by the starter "Could" interfere with the CAS signal but I'd think it unlikely that it would run on "sniff".
Without testing it I would guess you have a low fuel rail pressure problem.
And I would not fit new parts without investigating the rail pressure.
Peugeot diagnostics system would be the minimum tool I'd use,
Your looking for around 200 bar at crank from memory.
Less and it does just what you describe.
Try to find a local diesel injection specialist and stay clear of the clowns who "think it might be this or that!
