Renault Clio car wont start after overheating.

Car: Renault Clio
Variant: 1.2 extreme
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When on a long drive the car's stop and engine management lights come on, the car had overheated and steam was coming from the engine bay, i pulled over and turned the car off to let it cool down and filled up the water.
Now the car wont start. The AA suggested it may be the headgaskit however if that is the case surely the car should still start. Any ideas?

A block test will tell if head gasket gone or not .Could check compressions also re. starting .
