Renault Clio turbo

Car: Renault Clio
Variant: 1.5 dci
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
Car pouring out black smoke and loss of acceleration, suspect turbo.
How easy a job is it to change over the turbo for a diy mechanic ?

Difficult one to answer as it relay depends on your skill level,The thing,s to watch are make sure your oil delivery line and return are clear and that you make good connections ,the rest is how well thing,s come off hopefully without breaking,I would rate it as a moderate task.

My Mood: Re: Clio 1.5dci - Turbo Replacement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Labour charges should be around 4 to 6 hours. To do it yourself the car needs to be jacked up high or on a ramp and they can be a pig to fit if you have never done one before.
Also the inlet system and intercooler (if fitted) need to be thoroughly cleaned out. Plus it is recommended to repalce the turbo oil supply and oil return pipework.

A turbocharger is an exhaust gas-driven compressor used to increase the power output of an internal-combustion engine by compressing air that is entering the engine thus increasing the amount of available oxygen. A key advantage of turbochargers is that they offer a considerable increase in engine power with only a slight increase in weight.

I wouldn't reccomend it,
there's bugger all room to work back there,
even on a ramp!!
But what you can do is remove the air ducting to the turbo and check that for oil contamination,
if the turbo main seals have gone then it's usually soaking on the inside of the air ducting.
But I don't think you'll find anything,
Iv'e had one of these in with the exact same symptoms, bad news is I never got to the bottom of it,owner sold it on,
but general running and smoke was improved by disconnecting the multiplug to the airflow meter,do it when the engine is off,
As soon as I did this the owner said "that's good enough for me"!
and was off,what could I say/do?
If it's any help I was suspecting fuel pressure fluctuation but like I said, never got to the bottom of it.
