Renault Clio sounds like riding clutch when not even using it?

Car: Renault Clio
Model Year: 1997
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
On way home from Nottingham and car was warm and was tootling along at 60-70 mph and intermittantly the car kept making noises like I had ridden the clutch when not using the clutch at all. It was progressively getting worse so have only used it as needed locally but not as bad as it was. But also when we were using clutch control on hill it left a terrible burning smell. My dad dipped the clutch etc to see if car stalled but seemed to be no problem. At a loss. Don't know whether needs adjusting etc etc or new? Is it safe to drive?

sounds like the pressure plate in the clutch is going also know as the friction plate would try to adjust it but normally if it smells and is slipping then time for a new one would recommend changing the complete lot as it is three part and its cheaper than having to strip down the engine to change another bit of it if it goes do it once save on garage bills also make sure you get the old clutch so that you know its all been done some garages say they done it but they only change one part knowing other bit is gonna go soon
