Renault Clio belt jam

Car: Renault Clio
Variant: 1.6 Auto
Model Year: 1999
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
My alternator belt has snapped and wrapped its self behind the cam belt and crank pulley, now it wont turn over ive managed to get about half of it out but i cant see the rest.An AA man came out put the new belt on but didnt remove the old one then turned it over it didnt work so he said that ive prob bent the valves and its going cost between £500/£1000 so i want to know how can i it take the crank pulley off to see where the rest of the belt is and how do i tell if ive bent the valves if some one can help me i would be so very grateful as i cant afford to pay a mechanic to do the work or would i be better of scraping it

No disrespect but with your limited knowledge you would be better to get a garage to check it out .Not the brightest of things to do , fitting belt and not removing old belt and then starting .If timing has jumped because of cambelt and damaged valves , that is a bigger job meaning removing cyl head etc .Might be ok once old belt removed and timing checked but you wont know till it's done .

If damage has occurred due to the old belt not been removed, surely the AA have to take some responsibility??

^ x 2 . If one of my mechanics had done that he would have been in deep trouble or out on his ear .
