Peugeot 407 car cut out when driving

Car: Peugeot 407
Variant: 2.0 HDI
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Without warning my peugeot 407 2.0 HDI cut out and I pulled to side of road. With ignition on there were NO warning lights showing. Car would turn over when turning ignition but VERY slowly!! I let car cool down and tried again. It still would not start. I have very little knowledge of cars so I have no clue whats happened. I'm terrified to take it to a garage as it sounds kind of serious and I worry about the cost, especially if it's very expensive and I cannot afford it and the car is in bits from the garages investigation! I post this only in the hope that what's happened has happened to dozens of others who can happily say, " Ken, it's not a problem, just do this..... and the problems fixed for two balloons on a stick" Anyone help!?

You checked oil and water levels and plenty of fuel in car ?

If above o.k may be fuel pump .Or possibly alternator / battery problem but many other possible causes .You could try a jump start and see if it turns over faster and engine catches .
