Peugeot 406 oil tank smoking

Car: Peugeot 406
Variant: 1.8 manual
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When driving yesterday i noticed smoke coming from under the bonnet. On stopping i had a look and the smoke was coming from the oil tank.
The car is having problems with high revs (constantly at 2400pm) are they related?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes on all cars if the oil level is low the engine will over heat and you will get a smoky residue coming from the oil filler, so put the car on level ground and look at the dip stick take it out whipe it then put it back in then take it out again and look to see if the oil mark is between the two marks n the stick and also see if your temperature gage is reading hot
