Peugeot 406 misfiring engine?

Car: Peugeot 406
Variant: 1.8 LX Petrol
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Yesterday when I tried to start the car first time it failed. 2nd time it started but it is 'chugging' and grayish smoke coming from exhaust - there is a noticeable loss of power.
The oil level is fine - it was running with the petrol warning light on....any ideas.

i would say that you have picked up some dirt in the fuel line and its restricting the flow so all i can suggest is you replace the fuel filter and keep the fuel topped up so you dont pick up more dirt and have the same problem
