Usually after overheating if the water has been replaced with air you will get a cold reading as it needs water to read the temp.

Bleed the air out refill with water and try it again. You may be lucky its just low on water and that's all it needs

it could just be a coolant thermistor fault or maybe even a problem with the cooling fans either way get it checked out.

Agree. But usually fail in cold position ie no reading.

Easy way to find out is if you have warm air inside from your heaters.

Hot air means there is water in the pipes,
Cold air from a running engine most likely means no water

they can fail in either position, fail safe is gauge going to max and the cooling fans running full speed
