Peugeot 406 clicking noise before the key is turned

Car: Peugeot 406
Variant: hdi 90
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When I go to start the car and turn the key one notch there is a clicking noise that lasts about 8 seconds i.e click, click, click (quite loud. The gauges will not move until the clicking stops. It does not affect the starting of the car. When the car is stopped and the key removed the same clicking appears for 8-10 seconds then stops. I took the car to an auto spark, he removed the carpets on the floor to check for dampness as he says sometimes this can affect the wiring. The car was bone dry, he doesn't understand it. Any help would be much appreciated.

sounds like the ignition switch is at fault ,you did not say if the starter motor works straight off ?
It could be a loose battery lead or or a loose lead to the starter motor, the clicking is a relay trying to put the electric through .

check battery leads first /then check lead to starter ,then get ig switch checked ,as for damp on the floor ,get a new mechanic :
