Peugeot 308 jittery on starting & puff of smoke from exhaust

When car is started from cold its very 'jittery' & large puff of smoke omitted from exhaust....after a minute or so it runs fine ? no more smoke or jitters

Might be advisable to change fuel filter especially if not been done for a while and dependant on mileage .
