Peugeot 307 road rumble/hum from rear

Car: Peugeot 307
Variant: 1.6 Sport
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Now over a year I have had this problem and had it into well over 10 garages, but no-one can either hear the problem or find anything wrong.

I have been back to front left to right and had various a parts changed

Rear Bearing/disc and Pads.
Tyres changed and swapped with others more times than I remember.

I even thought it might be comignf rom the front, but again that looks like a red herring.

The noise is basically the driver side tyre but for some reason the vibration is making its way to the springs which are then resonating through the chassis. When you slap the tyres the vibration can be felt all through the axle, springs and I suppose the shocker too. What I can;t understand, is how this is coming into the chassis.

When the back parcel shelf is off, the noise is less, but I am guessing this is more to do with the noise being contained and made to sound louder.

Does anyone thinks this sounds like the axle bushes? Someone also mentioned the Axle Bearing, but where would that would. I can;t find any mention of it in the Haynes manual..

Tyres are not worn unevenly so that is also out,

ANy help greatly appreciated as this is beginning to affect my health, it is so annoying...

With the number of garages who have checked and road tested your car and the amount of money / parts you have fitted to no avail ,I honestly think the only way you will get rid of noise is to change your car .Either that or it's something you will have to live with .

My opinion is that all the garages are looking for a visible sign of a problem. Not one person has loosened one bolt of the suspension or tightened anything as they just don;t have the time to spend on something like this that needs proper troubleshooting.

I was thinking of taking it to get Soundproofed with this Dynamat but that was a last resort.

I don;t want to get rid of the car as the engine is great and apart from this noise it still has a lot of life in it.

My experience so far is that, with suspension noises, unless they can see it, they can;t fix it.

All it would take is a Rolling Road with a rough tarmac simulation and it would be easily pinpointed.

Just as a thought, all the tyres I have had on this car have been reinforced. Is it likely that re-inforced tyres create more noise that normal tyres.

Stiffer tyres can cause more road noise , but I thought you have already changed tyres ? If they cant hear it , they cant fix it . You cant expect mechanics to loosen bolts willy nilly for no reason .Your " Rolling Road with a rough tarmac simulation " doesn't exist as far as I know and even if it did , doubtful if you would hear it over the noise of machine .No disrespect , but if 10 garages cant hear the noise or find anything wrong , are you sure it's not you and not the car ?

sorry but i am with Whittinghame! just make sure you dont have a broken spring at the rear, its not uncommon to lose about an inch on the bottom of the spring and also check exhaust hangers and move them around /remove them as i have previously stated. failing that turn up the radio!

Gary, it seems I have the same problem with my Peugeot 307 1.6 Y2002. Not sure if sound is the same as yours - it's cyclic as if sharp metal rhythmically (pretty high periodicity) brushes to spinning metal cylinder (or finger over glass), it doesn't depend on acceleration, braking (hand brake also), engine rpms, gear shifts, clutch usage - just on speed (the faster the higher periodicity). It seems to be louder when cold (after a few hours standing) and sometimes disappears shortly when lightly turning (e.g. changing lanes).

My story is somehow related to Peugeot ABS problem (when ABS sensor rusts too far from bearing). The sound appeared 3 years ago and in a few weeks ABS light came on. Service men (they surely didn't know anything about "Peugeot ABS problem") were complaining that they did everything they could (polished brake discs and brushed some rust around), but it helped and I didn't go into details on what they've done exactly. A year ago the problem reappeared. This time ABS light came on first and the sound appeared later. Service men (this time I googled the solution myself) cleaned the sensor and the sound disappeared... for couple of months. Since then I "enjoy" the sound and service men can't find the source of it.

Have you checked ABS sensors? Have you found the solution?

Thank you in advance.

And one more thing - sound has disappeared when I've changed tires, but for a week only.
