Peugeot 307 wheel hum (the story continues)

Car: Peugeot 307
Variant: 1.6 Sport
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Ok, so most of you will remember I had this harmonic humming/tone coming from my driver side rear wheel. Took it to loads of dealers and none of them could hear anything ergo nothing to fix. I finally lost the plot and took things into my own hands, and had the back discs and pads replaced. The discs have integral bearings so I though "kill 2 birds with one stone".

Unfortunately this has not resolved the problem, but at least it has eliminated the bearing theory.

Any ideas of what could be causing it? Is it more likely to be a caliper issue as opposed to suspension.

Even though I have changed the tyres already, I am going to put my spare on for a day, as it is a continental tyre and I currently have dunlop.

Getting really really fed up with this as it has now been over 6 months,a nd I'm no further forward. I even have a recording of the said noise, so I can let others hear it, so if you want to hear and diagnose feel free to send me your email address..

check the back plates on the rear brakes are not rubbing on the discs, check your wheels are not touching the wheel arch liner.

Right, i recently(tues 31/8) got a 57 plate 307 s hdi 110 signed the finance ect walked proudly out to the newest car i've had pulled away down the street on to the slip road put my foot down and was impressed with the power(for a derv)and then....hit about 65 and was greeted with a loud droaning noise which got louder and then went after 85 upon slowing sure enough 85>65 there it was. it kind of sounds like when you go over the rumble strip at the edge of the motorway but a little less fierce anyone dicovered the coase of this annoying personality trait of the 307

So you are aware of what I have already done.

I have had the back discs and pads replaced (which include rear bearings) and it made no difference.

The only thing left that I can see is the caliper (which ahs been checked many times by many different garages) or as they suggest the tyres.

I replaced the original Pirelli Rosso Tyres with Good Year efficientgrips. After the noise appeared I swapped these with my wifes well worn Dunlops SP2050's (as she has an identical car). No noticable difference, but I now notice a rumble (different noise to mine) on my wifes car.

I am now looking at the possibility of the tyres themselves causing a vibration/resonance in the springs. Someone told me Pirelli's were soft rubber tyres and dampened any feedback. Dunlop/Good YEar on the other hand are apparently hard rubber tyres.

I am in the process of sourcing a couple of old pirelli tyres to test this theory.

Anyone any other ideas??? I was told to get some rubber stoppers (which are used by caravanners) to dampen the springs and see if the problem is located there. Any other fault finding tips would be greatly appreciated...

Have tried putting polystyrene in the springs to check for spring vibration, nothing. Have now even purchased 2 part worn pirelli rosso tyres to take them back to the originals and see if that is the problem, will keep you updated.
