Peugeot 307 tone noise/hum from rear driver side

Car: Peugeot 307
Variant: 1.6 Sport
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Have had a Toning noise/hum from my rear driver side for about 4 weeks now. Had it at two dealerships and one Indy and 2 out of 3 of them could not hear it, the other one said it was tyre noise.

Anyway, I changed the tyres with my Wife's car, as hers is identical, and the nosie continued. Have had the brakes cleaned (not once, but twice) and had the lips removed from the back brake disc, but still the noise continues.

Best way to describe it is like a wet finger going round the top of a glass, but not as high pitched. It IS affected by road surface. VEry smooth tarmac, very little noise, normal tarmac and the noise returns. The noise can be hear between 20mph and 55mph.

Have also tried gradually pulling the handbrake to see if the noise goes away or gets worse and it does not, but the noise does go away as you slow down below 20mph.

It is most noticable when approaching Roundabouts, as you slow down, you hear the tone peak and then disappear.

Have also tried going to the supermarket car park at night to execute hard left circles and hard right circles and there is a noticable difference, with the hard lefts creating a slight noise and the hard rights producing less noise.

For additional info, I did have a front passenger wheel bearing replaced the week before I noticed this noise, but to be fair, the noise of that was probably masking this noise.

Any help greatly appreciated

Certainly sounds like wheel bearing starting to go .Difference on noise when you drive in car park would tend to confirm this if , as you say , it alters when load transferred to each wheel .

You didnt say whether both your wifes and your car tyres are the same type. Can you see signs of uneven wear on the inside edge and did you take your wifes car for a drive to see if the noise transfered? Also check base of rear spring to make sure it is intact.May still be bearing noise though!

Had it out last night again and tested in car park, and could not for definite say there was much difference. There is another variable been thrown in. I have had my brakes cleaned twice now by two different garages to exclude that, as there was blue "burning marks" on the brake disc on the driver side rear, which matched up with the noise. The discs did not seem overly hot to the touch after a journey, in comparison to the fronts. Even after those two cleans there still seems to be rubbing on the back right brake. Is it possible that there is a problem with the caliper, and that this could be causing the noise.

The frustration here is that when the car is up on the ramp, there is no pressure on the tyres and hence the noise would be less, and on a rolling road, there is so much background noise you can;t here anything either.

Its still in Warranty by the dealership say there is nothign wrong (as usual)...

If anyone lives near Glasgow I could do witha hand.....before I go mad

If you put car on rolling road / brake tester and operate foot and handbrake ,it should show if there is any drag/binding on that brake calliper. You could go into any MOT station that was quite if you don't want to go to dealers .

When you say "cleaned "have the pads been removed from the yoke and all traces of corrosion removed from pad and yoke? This will enable the pads to move.If the discs have been getting that hot for a while chances are the bearing will have over heated!!!

Out again today and instead of getting more answers just more questions.

On the rear disk there is a bit of "blue-ing" on about the outer 2 cms of the disk. The rest is shiny silver.

I cannot pipoint if the noise is back or front. The one thing I have noticed is that my front right wheel is hotter than most after a journey.

IS there any test I can perform that will verify if the bearings are ok or faulty relating to the heat at the back of the wheel.

As I mentioned before I have tried the hard left and right turns (did it again today) and there is a difference on the left turn, but does that indicate a problem with the front right or the back right? All the noise I hear from driving is at the back, but when you do this left turn the groan seems to come from the front right??

It seems it needs tested on a car park to bring the sound out, but its is getting it there, and it only has 3 months left on its warranty..

Still have the Hum, but now I am unsure if the problem is coming from front right or back right of car. It sounds like the back right but I am wondering if the sound is travelling from the front as when you hear it you feel a very very slight vibration under the pedal. I have even gone to the extent of hooking my laptop with a microphone to try and capture the noise, to prove to the techs,a s they can;t hear it...

Now there is slight brake rubbing on my rear wheel, but the braking of the car does not make the noise go or any worse.

The biggest issue seems to be road surface. The rougher the surface the worse the hum is, and I know this sounds like tyre noise, but given that I have swapped all the tyres with my wifes' identical car that is not discounted.

All I need to know is, is it likely to be a bearing or some part of the braking mechanism.

I have had the car jacked up and checked for any play or noises in the wheels and can find none...

Would appreciate any help as this is seriously affecting my mental state....

replaced all the tyres, noise still there

OK, 6 months down the line and still to find a solution. HAve replaced back tyres again. This time with the original factory fitted Pirelli's and still no difference, so to summarise, I have so far replaced

Wheel Hub/Bearing/Brake Disc/Brake Pad on Rear
Swapped Wheels over several times with differnet tyres.

The cyclic hum continues.

Has anyone got anything else I could do to isolate the problem myself. I.e. is there anything I could use to dampen an area to pinpoint the problem

I feel it is either suspension related, something inside the caliper out of position or the thin metal shield behind the rear brake disk. I have checked for rubbing and there is nothing...
