Peugeot 307 auto transmission not engaging

When switching on the key the transmission panel shows P ( Park ) only,when shifting to N-R-D does not appear on the screen.There is no movement. What could be the problem please assist

it sounds like a fault with the multi function switch on the gearbox but could also be a problem with the selector cable.Although the lever moves it might not be moving the selector on the box.
