Peugeot 307 stop light and overheating

Car: Peugeot 307
Variant: hdi 2 litre
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
hi, my peogeut 307 hdi 2 litre is having STOP light come on after about 10 minutes driving and temperature gauge would jump from 70 to max. For the first few times stop sign and temperature gauge would max for few seconds and then back to normal.

But last night after about 10 minutes driving the stop light came on and temperature gauge stayed at max until i switched the engine off and to let it cool. coolant was hot but level was fine. Does anyone know what could be the problem? thanks
