Peugeot 206 loud noise without car even running

Car: Peugeot 206
Variant: HDi - basic model no car alarm
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I had my car fully serviced and MOT'd on 01.10.10. Came to use the car again for the first time since driving it back from the garage. Used the fob key to unlock the car and as soon as I opened the door a piercing high pitched continuous blaring noise that sounds like the horn being permanently pressed started. I had to disconnect one of the leads to the battery to stop the sound. Tried again - as soon as I went to open the car the noise went off again. The car does not have an alarm and when I phoned the garage the salesmen confirmed the immobiliser does not make a noise. I am also able to turn the engine on so I know it's nothing to do with this. Typically when this problem happened the technicians had left for the weekend and I can't get hold of anyone who can help. The salesmen have advised me to get the car towed to the garage because they don't know what the problem is, and I told them quite angrily that the problem had not occured until the MOT/service!! Can anyone help me understand what this mysterious problem is and even better what I need to do to solve it or whether it's even safe to drive with the noise blaring so I can get it to the garage!

Surely it's got to be the alarm that's been activated ??

is noise coming from inside the car?

Not really sure where the noise is coming from. It sounds louder outside the car than in it though. Not sure if it's coming from in the bonnet because it sounds equally as loud with the bonnet up or down.

There's definitely no alarm on the car. I've asked the salesman and he assures me there are only alarms on the highest spec cars. I bought the car from my dad who originally bought it new so I know the car has not been modified in any way.

it probably is the horn going off. you need a new one

I've managed to identify the cause of the original problem after phoning a technician in the local Peugeot garage. After removing the fuse for the horn the noise stopped so thank you for your help.

Since then the car does not start. The battery symbol has appeared on the dash but I have checked the connections and they are all tight - no visible problems.

Also now the key fob does not work even with a new batter and the central locking system does not work. A neighbour who has been helping me thinks the local Peugeot garage have not reset something after connecting the car to the computer to reset the service reminder. I hate my local Peugeot garage - this is the second time I've had problems after taking my car there to be serviced!!

Any ideas what this could be please?

If removing the fuse stopped the horn going off then as said before i suspect the horn is faulty. the fuse you removed must also be used for other things if not now working.I think you will find it is a coincidence this happened since it was serviced.there may be other causes but i would try a horn first.

Could try disconnecting horn , refitting fuse and then reprogramme key fob ?
