206 GTi instrument cluster - bulb change

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello all,

As I've gained a lot of tips and knowledge from those who post here (and from 206GTi.net), I decided a while ago to post about anything that I learnt so that others could gain knowledge.

I had to change a bulb at the back of my instrument cluster today, as the one that illuminates the odometer had blown. Not knowing how hard it would be I thought I'd have a crack at it, and it couldn't be easier. I thought I'd post a couple of tips and some pictures for anyone who needs to do the same in the future. Our car is a 2000 model 206GTi, but I would think that this process would be the same, or similar, for other models.

The dash pod that covers the instrument panel is held on by clips only, and it's best to lift the rear/top of the pod first. You'll have to try and slide/coax the pod forward slightly as you lift. The bottom section of the pod will be more difficult to remove but patience is the key, don't be too forceful. Make sure the steering column is adjusted fully down before you start, and beginning from the passenger side seems to be easier. Again, the pod is clipped in at the bottom and will need to be coaxed forwards as well as slightly upwards. See pics 1-8.

Once the pod is off, there will be one Torx 20 screw at the top of the cluster. Once this is removed, the cluster can be partially removed to gain access to the wiring. The top of the cluster should be pulled towards you first - it may not come freely, but with a slight amount of force it will clear a locator clip. The bottom of the cluster has two locator tabs with rubber covers, lift the cluster to clear these. See pics 8-11.

Before you can get the cluster out you'll have to disconnect the wiring. You won't have too much room to move the cluster around as the attached wiring prevents a lot of movement. See pic 12. You can move the cluster around enough to see what you're doing and, once the wiring is removed from the white tabs at the back, you'll have more room to remove the two wiring connections. See pic 13. They are the lever type - the black lever unclips them by being moved towards the drivers side from vertical to horizontal. You have to press down the little tab that holds the black lever in place.

Once you have the cluster out, you'll see a load of bulb holders on the back. See pics 14-15. Most are white on mine, but a couple are black (and some aren't there). They are removed with a 90 degree turn and the 12V 1.2W wedge bulbs are simply pulled out and new ones ($3-4 for two at Supercheap) can be pushed in. Watch the contacts on the tiny bulbs though - they are merely a small length of wire bent over the mounting end of the bulb - one contact bent over each side of the bulbs mounting end. Once your new bulb is in the bulb holder, refit with a 1/4 turn. They can be difficult to get in and out so small pliers can be used, but be gentle.

Refit everything and you should have your instruments/warning light(s) working fully again.

It really is an easier job than I thought, and hopefully if anyone here has to do it my tips can be helpful.

Cheers

Jamie
