Peugeot 206 losing 4th gear

Car: Peugeot 206
Variant: 1.4 Automatic
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,
Please also have a look at my query regarding "Automatic loses power when warm" as it may have some reference to this question.

A couple of times when I've been out; the car does not go into 4th gear; when this happens i have to drive home in either 1,2 or 3rd gear...bit of a nuisance if I'm far away!!!

1st time it happened; I have had a bit of a play with the selector cable and this cured the problem. However, the problem came back.

Please see the attached picture; the spring push part of this is to adjust the cable; is it possible that it has worn and need changing? Anyone heard of this type of problem before?
It suggests in the manual that the selector bracket should be straight when the gear lever is in Park, which mine isn't, but wouldn't this stop it from going into the lower gears and not Drive?
I've had another play with this selector part and it seems to have cured it again but i do not have much faith in it not happening again

Thanks,

Mark

if you adjust the cable and it cures the problem temporarily then it sounds like wear of the cable, these cables do stretch and there is only so much adjustment you can do,get a new one put on and adjust it

you may have a problem with the multifunction switch the cable attaches too. these need to be adjusted with a multi meter.

Hi Paulieone,

Your suggestion re: using the multi-meter; would this also give me the problems I've been experiencing with loss of power? (please see other posting)
Could you explain a bit more about where abouts you do the test and how I go about it?
I'm a sparky by trade and have a multi-tester and know the difference between Ohms, amps & volts etc

Many Thanks,

Mark

Havent set one up in ages but i think you need to have park selected disconnect cable then undo torx screw on top of switch. connect meter across the two terminals and slowly turn either way until you see open circuit. I remember saying to you that box ecu may need to learn your driving style. have you had ecu's read to see if any faults are recorded?

Not had any diagnostics read except using the RAC code reader which I brought from Argos.

I'd love to just give it to a garage for them to sort out but I have had bad experiences with Peugeot main dealers in the past and really don't want to use them if i can help it.
My issue is that if; i give it to a local garage will they do what i'm doing i.e. plug in a diagnostic code reader, change Map sensor, runthe programme again, change another part ... and so on and so on.
