Peugeot 206 gears whining when leaving 2nd and 4th

Car: Peugeot 206
Variant: 1.1 LX 3-Door
Model Year: 2001
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi,

When i change gear from 2nd and 4th there is a whining noise coming from the gears. The problem isn't there at the start of a journey but 5 minutes in it starts and gradually gets worse.

I've heard that the garage is likely to tell me to replace the entire gearbox which is probably worth more than the car so any help people can provide me will be greatly appreciated!!

Assume you have checked g/box oil level ?

I'm slightly simple when it comes to car knowledge. Do i check that the normal way you check oil?

Thanks for helping!

No problem , it's different from checking engine oil . Usual set up is a level plug on g/ box .If not sure , run into any fast fit centre when they are quite and ask them to put up on ramp and check oil for you . Simple 2 min job . If it is low on oil , the quicker the better , worth a try .
