Peugeot 206 erratic steering

Car: Peugeot 206
Variant: convertibale
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
My sister has a 1.6 206 convertable.

It has just cost her over four hundred pounds at the garage to have the car repaired but has not cured the problem.

When driving the car is almost impossible to hold in a straight line. Under acceleration it swerves all over the road. She went into a corner after all the work had been done and the car lost control and spun 360 degrees at low speed.

It has had both bottom arms drop links and track rod ends replaced the first time it went in. When it failed to cure it the garage then diagnosed a faulty driveshaft which they then replaced. Now the garage is saying they think the fault is in the rear of the car. She has now phoned me last and told me that its still not fixed.

It has also been tracked every time work has been done on it.

I am thinking only a few possibilites now like a faulty gearbox sending too much drive to one wheel, or that the car has been bumped and knocked the alignment of the body out.

I am posting this in the hope someone else has came across this problem with this particular model and that its not as serious as what i am not thinking

all advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Stuart

With the bits the garage have fitted without fixing it , and the latest theory about the back end , sounds like they haven't a clue whilst they just bottle your sister up for £400 .You could check engine mountings , but really need to get a full geometry check carried out to see if the car is " bent " due to accident damage .If car has been repaired badly and is " crabbing " you've got serious trouble .

If the stearing holds to one side or tother or is being erratic, one of the other things to check would be the front suspension leg bearings these sometimes get seized and can feel wierd and eratic through the steering. quick to eliminate just jack the car up (both fronts of the ground) and then with the engine off first but the key in the ignition turn the steering through its lock by turning the road wheel. do it slowly and if it is really heavy and grating to the touch or judders then it's a sure fire sign that this is contributing. If not it goes on to the more exspensive answers by whittingehame who is absolutly right with what he says here. Good luck

I had a look at the car yesterday and was rather astounded at how thick the garage was. After all that work they had done to it they didnt do the simplest thing and check the engine mounts. When i took the battery housing out it was immediatley obvious that the gearbox mount was torn, even pulling on the engine showed how much play it had. This was changed today and there is now no play in the steering whatsoever but thank you both for your advice it was much appreciated
