Have you tried moving the float and seeing if it works outside tank ? This is from 206 forum ,

this is a common fault, have alook the tank unit , make sure the float is free to rotate where the tank unit fits , you will see some raised marks on the tank and one on the gauge, i'm pretty sure it should be in the middle.
the unit has restricted movement if its not fitted correctly.
the other thing is check in the bsi to see what the tank unit is saying to it.
float resitance.
full 14 ohms
mid 165 .
empty 340
the gauge resitance
full 15ohms
1/2 150
1/4 300
fuel light on empty 325
