Nissan Micra split in gaiter

Im concerned that my car has just had its MOT and was told the gaiter had a split and it would have to be stripped down and the part replaced, along with a couple of headlights/bulbs needed replacing. Cost £127.00 including £35.00 for MOT. My partner took his car to same garage next day, much newer car, a Fiesta and low and behold he was told his car had exactly the same problems as mine - a split in the gaiter, and a couple of headlights/bulbs needed replacing!! Im very very suspicious, whats your advice.
