The first thing i would do is check the oil level. What's the mileage? .

To me this sounds like the start of a head gasket failure,
White smoke is always coolant related.

With the colder , damp weather especially , all car make some white smoke on start up .This is normal as for every gallon of petrol used it produces water / condensation which you see dripping out of tail pipe and as white smoke .This will clear as car reaches operating temp and the heat dries it up .It tends to get worse if car used for short journeys .Provided you are not losing any coolant or running hot , nothing to worry about . If coolant dropping , and no visible leaks , get pressure test on cooling system which will show any external leaks a block test which will show any head / gasket problems .

there is quite a lot of smoke and it does smell of burning but settles down other than this problem the car drives lovely,my husband did put to much oil in a couple of months ago and was wondering could that be the cause

Too much oil , not just a small amount over like 1/2 pt would usually cause blue smoke at rear .If it was badly over filled you may also get the smell of oil burning if it was pushed through into exhaust from engine but would gradually clear if level dropped to correct amount by draining off excess and car run .

been like this for about 3 months now husband just keeps saying its burning the oil still from when i over filled it,besides that the car starts great every time is not sluggish but does seem to peform better at higher speeds dont know if almeras are known for this though

Excessive oil can cause back pressure in engine resulting in damage , oil leaks .Make sure there are no oil leaks as it could drip on to engine or exhaust and give the burning smell .Oil leak may not show under car if this is the case .
