Mitsubishi Shogun running gear

Car: Mitsubishi Shogun
Variant: 4x4 LWB animal Auto tiptronic
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Steering, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres
Intermittent hideous noise (sounds like a tube train coming in to a station) will disappear straight away if you engage 4 wheel drive (high range) & then put back to 2 wheel drive or throttle off completely & then put power back on. Rotational noise.
Changed all break pads, no scoring on discs.
Checked diff, changed oil, shows no wear or swarf.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
