Mitsubishi Pajero exhaust smoking when accelerating,

Car: Mitsubishi Pajero
Variant: 3.2 di
Model Year: 2006
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Just have just bought this car. Looks very nice and sporty and has done 74k miles. The car is a bit more noisy when accelerating and black smoke can be seen coming out of the exhaust which is visible from the side mirror. The car does feel sluggish when it accelerates especially up hill. Also the temperature gauge sits at zero and does not move to the mid point.

Any ideas of what the problem is?

Temp gauge could be thermostat stuck open or faulty sensor . Need to get it scanned or checked out for diesel problem with smoke otherwise just guessing on many possible causes .

The 3.2 is generally a noisey engine inside the vehicle if this has changed since you got it ie louder and the smoke has just started i would get it looked at straight away.
Its very likely you will have a fault code logged so that should be your first port of call, black smoke would indicate overfueling ie injectors or an egr issue, temp gauge should run in the middle, the code read may well show this fault if not start with a thermostat
